Pens of Note - Faber-Castell

Pens of Note

Pens of Note are those pens of my collection that rank as something special.

Faber-Castel was founded in 1761 in Stein Germany. The company started with the production of pencils. The company produces a range of writing instruments. High end items included the Graff von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year. I see those pens going for about $2,500. But there are others that are well below that price point for consideration.

Ambition Series

Faber-Castell Ambition Series

As a pen user it is not how much the pen costs, but how it writes. Everyone loves having a great priced pen, and the Ambition Series by Faber-Castell nicely meets that need.

I have been using the Ambition Series in Black for a few years now. A very smooth writing stainless steel nib. The fact that it comes in a broad width is what got me to the try the pen in the first place.

At the end of 2006 they issued the Ambition line in a Coconut Wood body, the "Cocos" and the folks at Vancouver Pen were quick to put one of these aside for me. Faber- Castel indicated in an article on the pen, published in Pen World in 2007, that it took them two years to perfect the pen because the wood is hard to work with.

The body is about a slim as I would want to go now that I am user large pens, however, I find this pen okay in my hand. Both the pens have a sleek smart appearance. The Black pen with the chrome-plated cap is a real looker. The rich brown and black tones of the Cocos line makes the pen look much more expensive than it is. I regularly receive comments when using the pen.

When I got the Ambition in Black it was a bit of a tight process getting the converter to fit in the pen. That issue seems have been resolved with the Cocos.

The inner fitting of the Cap and body is plastic, and I hope over time that will wear down but in using the Ambition for a number of years this has not been a problem.

For me, posting the cap on the pen ins important, and the E-Motion series, which is a much fatter pen, has the problem that the cap will not stay posted to the body and I can't use that pen.

Here is another great pen I acquired at Vancouver Pen and this pen is a regular in the ones that I am writing with on a regular basis. This pen is a fine example of how you can have a well designed and made fountain pen for a very reasonable price.

The body of the pen is a black plastic and the top chrome-plated metal. The sleek lines of the hexagonal barrel and cap in black and silver gives this pen a very classic look.

The pen fills with a cartridge/converter system and you screw off the nib section to access the converter.

The nib is stainless steel and is a fine example of how steel nibs can provide very smooth writing experiences. The pen is available in Fine, Medium or Broad and my Broad is great.

There is also a ballpoint and mechanical pencil in the series. I may have to get one of each!
