(2009) Fabulous location, just a few streets from the Piazza San Marco and right in the middle of a very expensive shopping area.
Take the Line 1 or 2 vaporetto & get off at the Calle Valleresso / San Marco stop. It is about a 2 block walk to the hotel. It is right beside a gondola stop but we recommend that you save your money. We got talked into taking a gondola ride on a different occasion and it was a huge disappointment and very, very expensive!!
You get a much better view and experience by just hopping on a vaporetto.. Be sure to position yourself on the outside so you can take lots of pictures.

This 3 star hotel has a very nice lobby and we were met by very helpful staff. We used their services in booking restaurants and their recommendations were right on the money for what we wanted.
We, particularly, liked Vino Vino. It is a small restaurant, with nice décor, fabulous food, and great wine. Our server went out of her way to ensure that we had a very enjoyable evening. We were only in Venice 2 nights and had we gone to the Vino Vino on the first night we may have returned on the second night…it was that good! . They have a more upscale, visited by many celebrities, next door called Antico Martini. www.anticomartini.com It is only a couple of streets over from the hotel. Don’t be caught without money, though, as we were very surprised that they do not accept credit cards.
We were travelling with friends and our (standard) room looked very much like the ones shown on their web site. Our friends’ room, however, was not as nice and could have used a bit of sprucing up. No view for either, but we were not expecting one. The hotel was very good value as they had an advanced booking discount which made the room a bargain based on Venice’s notoriously high rates.
We loved the idea of being able to come back to the hotel and enjoy drinks at their roof-top terrace. This is where the hotel really exaggerates it on the web site. We did not find table cloths, fancy chairs or bar service.. What we did find was about three tables and chairs and a couple of chaise lounges. We were able to drink our own champagne up there and the front desk was happy to provide us with champagne flutes. We enjoyed ourselves just the same.
They serve a standard breakfast, included in the price of the room.
Overall, we highly recommend the Hotel Violino D’Oro as a pleasant place to stay to enjoy the exceptional location.

(2009) This restaurant is located between the La Fenice Opera House and via XXII Marzo not that far from St. Mark's Square.

Staying in Venice is becoming more and more difficult as well as attracting higher and higher price tags. For our 2001 visit we stayed at the very pleasant Hotel Martello located in Marghera - just outside of Venice. Good choice. The hotel is clean and well-run. Located in a quite residential area, a short 10 minute walkt to the Marghera/Mistre train station. There are trains every 10-15 minutes to take you on the 15 minute ride to Venice. The fare is about 6,000 Italian Lire for a return ticket.
You can enjoy your day in Venice, and return to a very good little hotel. Breakfast is included. There is lots of parking available.
