An incredible area of Tuscany

I find the Crete Senesi , an area in the Province of Siena, in the Region of Tuscany, to be particularly stunning. This area is located just south of Siena. Herre you find a range a hills and woods among villages as set in a stunning landscape of grey clay soil, golden brown fields and green woods. In this area are the towns of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso.

Crete senesi are literally ‘Senese clays. It is the distinctive grey colouration of the soil that gives the landscape a feeling of being on the moon. This clay, mattaione, actual is the sediments of the Pliocene sea which once covered the area between 2.5 and 4.5 million years ago. Nearby is also the semi-arid area known as the Accona Desert.

If you are a photographer, then travel to the Crete Senesi is a must!
